Around 7 years or so ago, I set up my Atmosferik Photography, based in Liverpool, Merseyside. The initial objective was to provide wedding photography in the area, offerring photographers for resonable costs for couples who found the whole costs of weddings astronomical. The company was aimed at the low end consumer, with the aim over a number of years to steadily increase the prices as we gained a foothold in the industry.
The easiest way we found initially in getting the companys name out there was to use the Google tool Adwords. This initially meant that by investing only a few hundres pounds, we could be literally ALL OVER the internet regionally, being 'Top' on Google and mainly, 'Being noticed' by Brides and Grooms. At the time, the average click was around 40p, and that meant being listed right at the top of google. At the time, I was able to list Atmosferik top of Google covering all the local areas, including Liverpool, Merseyside & Manchester
We have since stopped using this form of advertising as we now find it too costly.
Photography is a visual type of media and one problem with this is that other photographers regularly look at your work costing you large amounts of cash. This is an unfortunate problem with this industry and something that as a photographer means that advertising on Adwords becomes a bit of a waste of time and money. Look at it this way, to advertise per click in Manchester or Chester, the average photographer may now be required to pay in excess of ? per click in the top spot!!!
We did a test a few months ago... One week on Adwords, one off... After around 6 months, we came to the conclusion that Adwords didn't benefit us enough to advertise our services in the wedding industry.
Following this, we have now focussed on website optimisation. In other industries, this clearly isn't a problem, but for us, in the wedding photography industry it is a none starter. For any photographer wanting a quick fix, this is certainly something which may be beneficial to getting business in a very competetive industry, but after some time, those photographers in question may find that this route is moribund.
