She made no answer, but simply gazed at him. He went on:

`One day a son may be born, my son, and he will be legally a Karenin; he will not be the heir of my name nor of my property; and however happy we may be in our home life, and however many children we may have, there will be no real tie between us. They will be Karenin's. You will understand the bitterness and horror of this position! I have tried to speak of this to Anna. It irritates her. She does not understand, and to her I cannot speak plainly of all this. Now look at another side. I am happy, happy in her love, but I must have occupation. I have found occupation, and am proud of what I am doing, and consider it nobler than the pursuits of my former companions at Court and in the army. Darya Alexandrovna noticed that at this point in his explanation he grew confused, and she did not quite understand this digression, but she felt that having once begun to speak of matters near his heart, of which he could not speak to Anna, he was now making a clean breast of everything, and that the question of his pursuits in the country fell into the same compartment of his intimate meditations as the question of his relations with Anna.

`Well, I will go on,' he said, collecting himself. `The great thing is that as I work I want to have a conviction that what I am doing will not die with me, that I shall have heirs to come after me - and this I have not. Conceive the position of a man who knows that his children, the children of the woman he loves, will not be his, but will belong to someone who hates them and cares nothing about them! It is awful!

`How quickly work gets done with you!'

`By the autumn it will all be ready. Inside almost everything is done,' said Anna.

`And what's this new building?'

`That's the house for the doctor and the dispensary,' answered Vronsky; seeing the architect in a short jacket coming toward him, and excusing himself to the ladies, he went to meet him.

There was no time for talking about anything before dinner. Going into the drawing room they found Princess Varvara already there, and the gentlemen of the party in black frock coats. The architect wore a swallow-tailed coat. Vronsky presented the doctor and the steward to his guest. The architect he had already introduced to her at the hospital.

A stout butler, resplendent with a smoothly shaven round chin and a starched white cravat, announced that dinner was ready, and the ladies got up. Vronsky asked Sviiazhsky to take in Anna Arkadyevna, and himself offered his arm to Dolly. Veslovsky was before Tushkevich in offering his arm to Princess Varvara, so that Tushkevich with the steward and the doctor walked in alone.

Vassenka Veslovsky, her husband, and even Sviiazhsky, and many other people she knew, would never have considered this question, and would have readily believed what every well-bred host tries to make his guests feel, that is, that all that is well-ordered in his house has cost him, the host, no trouble whatever, but comes of itself. Darya Alexandrovna was well aware that even porridge for the children's breakfast does not come of itself, and that therefore, where so complicated and magnificent a style of luxury was maintained, someone must give earnest attention to its organization. And from the glance with which Alexei Kirillovich scanned the table, from the way he nodded to the butler, and offered Darya Alexandrovna her choice between cold soup and hot soup, she saw that it was all organized and maintained by the care of the master of the house himself. It was evident that it all rested no more upon Anna than upon Veslovsky. She, Sviiazhsky, the Princess, and Veslovsky, were equally guests, with light hearts enjoying what had been arranged for them.

`Well, then, let us sit here.'

Oh, yes,' answered Darya Alexandrovna, putting down her sunshade, `but...'

`No,' he broke in, and unconsciously, oblivious of the awkward position in which he was putting his companion, he stopped abruptly, so that she had to stop short too. `No one feels more deeply and intensely than I do all the difficulty of Anna's position; and that you may well understand, if you do me the honor of supposing I have any heart. I am to blame for that position, and that is why I feel it.'

`I understand,' said Darya Alexandrovna, involuntarily admiring the sincerity and firmness with which he said this. `But just because you feel yourself responsible, you exaggerate it, I am afraid,' she said. `Her position in the world is difficult, I can well understand.'

`In the world it is hell!' he brought out quickly, frowning darkly. `You can't imagine moral sufferings greater than what she went through in Peterburg during that fortnight.... And I beg you to believe it.'

`Yes, but here, so long as neither Anna... nor you want society...'

`Society!' he said contemptuously. `How could I want society?'

`So far - and it may be so always - you are happy and at peace. I see in Anna that she is happy, perfectly happy - she has had time to tell me so much already,' said Darya Alexandrovna, smiling; and involuntarily, as she said this, at the same moment a doubt entered her mind whether Anna really were happy.

But Vronsky, it appeared, had no doubts on that score.

`Yes, yes,' he said, `I know that she has revived after all her sufferings; she is happy. She is happy in the present. But I?... I am afraid of what is before us... I beg your pardon - you would like to walk on?'

`No, I don't mind.'

`Well, then, let us sit here.'

Darya Alexandrovna sat down on a garden seat in a corner of the avenue. He stood up, facing her.

`I see that she is happy,' he repeated, and the doubt whether she were happy sank more deeply into Darya Alexandrovna's mind. `But can it last? Whether we have acted rightly or wrongly is another question, but the die is cast,' he said, passing from Russian to French, `and we are bound together for life. We are united by all the ties of love that we hold most sacred. We have a child, we may have other children. But the law and all the conditions of our position are such that thousands of complications arise which she does not see at present, and does not want to see, setting her heart at rest after all these sufferings and ordeals. And that one can well understand. But I can't help seeing them. My daughter is by law not my daughter, but Karenin's. I cannot bear this falsity!' he said, with a vigorous gesture of refusal, and he looked with gloomy inquiry toward Darya Alexandrovna.

`Why, it's actually you, Levin, at last!' he said with a friendly mocking smile, gazing on the approaching man. `How is it you have deigned to look me up in this den?' said Stepan Arkadyevich and, not content with shaking hands, he kissed his friend. `Have you been here long?'
`I have just come, and very much wanted to see you,' said Levin, looking about him shyly, and, at the same time, angrily and uneasily.
`Well, let's go into my room,' said Stepan Arkadyevich, who knew his friend's sensitive and irritable shyness, and, taking his arm, he drew him along, as though guiding him through dangers.
Stepan Arkadyevich was on familiar terms with almost all his acquaintances, and called almost all of them by their Christian names: old men of sixty, boys of twenty, actors, ministers, merchants and adjutant generals, so that many of his intimate chums were to be found at the extreme ends of the social ladder, and would have been very much surprised to learn that they had, through the medium of Oblonsky, something in common. He was the familiar friend of everyone with whom he took a glass of champagne, and he took a glass of champagne with everyone, and when in consequence he met any of his disreputable chums, as he used in joke to call many of his friends, in the presence of his subordinates, he well knew how, with his characteristic tact, to diminish any possible disagreeable impression. Levin was not a disreputable chum, but Oblonsky, with his ready tact, felt that Levin fancied Oblonsky might not care to show his intimacy with him before subordinates, and so Stepan Arkadyevich made haste to take him off into his room.
Levin was almost of the same age as Oblonsky; their intimacy did not rest merely on champagne. Levin had been the friend and companion of his early youth. They were fond of one another in spite of the difference of their characters and tastes, as friends are fond of one another who have been together in early youth. But in spite of this, each of them - as is often the way with men who have selected careers of different kinds - though in discussion he would even justify the other's career, in his heart despised it. It seemed to each of them that the life he led himself was the only real life, and the life led by his friend was a mere phantasm. Oblonsky could not restrain a slight mocking smile at the sight of Levin. How often he had seen him come up to Moscow from the country where he was doing something, but what precisely Stepan Arkadyevich could never quite make out, and indeed took no interest in the matter. Should they have any milk? Should not a new cook be sent for?'
`Ah, let me alone, let me alone!' she said, and going back to her bedroom she sat down in the same place she had occupied when talking to her husband, clasping tightly her thin hands, her rings slipping down on her bony fingers, and fell to going over her recollections of the entire interview. `He has gone! Stepan Arkadyevich had learned easily at school, thanks to his excellent abilities, but he had been idle and mischievous, and therefore was one of the lowest in his class. But in spite of his habitually dissipated mode of life, his inferior grade in the service, and his comparative youth, he occupied the honorable and lucrative position of president of one of the government boards at Moscow. This post he had received through his sister Anna's husband, Alexei Alexandrovich Karenin, who held one of the most important positions in the ministry to which the Moscow office belonged. But if Karenin had not got his brother-in-law this berth, then through a hundred other personages - brothers, sisters, cousins, uncles and aunts - Stiva Oblonsky would have received this post or some other like it, together with the salary of six thousand absolutely needful for him, as his affairs, in spite of his wife's considerable property, were in a poor state.
Half Moscow and Peterburg were friends and relations of Stepan Arkadyevich. He was born in the midst of those who had been, and had become, the powerful ones of this world. One-third of the men in the government, the older men, had been friends of his father's, and had known him in pinafores; another third were his intimate chums, and the remainder were friendly acquaintances. Consequently the distributors of earthly blessings in the shape of posts, rents, concessions and such, were all his friends, and could not overlook one of their own set; and Oblonsky had no need to make any special exertion to get a lucrative post. He had only not to refuse things, not to show jealousy, not to be quarrelsome or take offense, all of which from his characteristic good nature he never did. It would have struck him as absurd if he had been told that he would not get a position with the salary he required, especially as he expected nothing out of the way; he only wanted what the men of his own age and standing did get, and he was no worse qualified for performing duties of this kind than any other man.
Stepan Arkadyevich was not merely liked by all who knew him for his good humor, his bright disposition and his unquestionable honesty; in him, in his handsome, radiant figure, his sparkling eyes, black hair and eyebrows, and his white and pink complexion, there was something which produced a physical effect of kindliness and good humor on the people who met him. `Aha! Stiva! Oblonsky! The man himself!' was almost always said with a smile of delight on meeting him. In a press release issued by the university, Alderman stated, I have heard it seriously argued that international students who plagiarise should be treated more leniently that British students, because of "differential cultural norms .

According to a report in The Independent at the time, Alderman was not the only academic with such an opinion. Accompanied by a graph showing an explosion in first degrees (the numbers jumped from 16,708 to 36,645 in a decade), the Professor of English at Warwick University, Jonathan Bate, also expressed his concern.

Interestingly, since these points were raised, it seems that very little direct action has been taken by universities to put an end to so-called league table culture . This lack of action is notable in regards to similar accusations made about the standards and worth of GCSEs and A-Levels in response to exam league tables. In the following August, many respected independent schools (albeit, ones with well-established reputations), such as Eton, St Paul s, and Radley, decided to boycott these league tables. A sustainable landfill would be a landfill which is designed to clean itself of all harmful substances which might cause a harmful emission within a generation. That way each generation would deal with its own waste and pass on a clean environment to each successive generation.

A sustainable landfill would be a wonderful achievement, and paradoxically without even trying our ancestors once did achieve this, before the arrival of the industrial revolution. Sadly, life is not so simple for our generation, and it will be much harder for future generations unless we can find a way of achieving sustainability in so much of what we do today, which is far from sustainable.

The first step in designing a sustainable landfill would be to speed up the time needed for full decomposition and then continue to flush the landfill with clean fresh water. What do we mean by flushing in this context? We mean putting enough water through the landfill to remove all the water soluble components of a landfill, including all the soluble organic content, such that we need no longer keep it sealed from the environment to protect the surrounding environment from it.

The first step of flushing would be to pump a lot of water through the landfill, and recirculate it to ensure decomposition is rapid. Then, all of that water being recirculated will eventually have to be treated as leachate.

The leachate treatment may be carried out on-site or off-site but in both cases the residual components must be discharged off-site. If this is not done and the treated leachate continues to be recirculated, then components of the leachate such as chlorides will remain in elevated concentrations, and sustainably goals are not achieved. Compounds like chlorides (as in common table salt) may be polluting if they were to be released suddenly into the environment at concentrations significantly higher that the normal background concentration, and thus the landfill would continue to present a threat to the environment.

A strategy that consists only of recirculation of leachate, therefore, is not sustainable. A lot of landfill operators use Reverse Osmosis to treat leachate, however, that is short sighted and runs completely counter to all philosophy of the sustainable landfill, returning as these sites usually do, all of the residual components and removing only he pure water. (Incidentally, the elevated ammoniacal nitrogen resulting will be expected to have a very negative impact on landfill gas production as well.)

The volume of leachate and certainly the concentration of contaminants in that leachate will vary as the site ages. Of the components of leachate which will require treatment, the ammoniacal nitrogen content is usually the most expensive to deal with. As the refuse in the landfill is flushed, the concentrations of components such as ammoniacal nitrogen will fall.

Ammoniacal nitrogen concentrations may initially be in excess of 2,500mg/l and have to be reduced to less than 10mg/l. As the nitrogen is leached from the site, supplying a constant daily load of ammoniacal nitrogen to a treatment plant would require the daily volume treated to increase as the leachate becomes more dilute.

The degradable materials, ammoniacal nitrogen and the degradable organic compounds measured as BOD, can be successfully reduced in an SBR (sequencing batch reactor) biological leachate treatment plant to an acceptable level for recirculation or for discharge to the environment. Poorly degradable organic compounds and inorganic salts 'will be residual components that may prove problematical for discharge under some circumstances.

If the discharge is to a relatively small surface watercourse then the size of the treatment plant may be limited by the amounts of chloride and non-degradable Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) which may be discharged. Any limits on the discharge of non-degradable components may have obvious implications for the size of landfill that can be operated in a sustainable manner in a given location.

If the discharge of leachate is to sewer, then chlorides will pass through the sewage works untreated apart from dilution. Poorly degradable organic compounds will also pass through the sewage treatment works apart from a small degree of treatment and possibly some adsorption onto the sludge. The receiving works' own discharge limits may restrict the volume or load of leachate that can be accepted to sewer, and hence restrict the opportunities for flushing.

Treatment of the necessary large amounts of leachate, either in a purpose-built plant or in a sewage
treatment works will obviously entail higher rates of expenditure than are usually allocated for this currently at many landfills. However, present practices lead to the same pollution load being produced, treated and discharged, entailing similar total costs, but simply over longer time scales. The difference is therefore mainly a function of how accounting practices treat short-term and long-term expenditure.

It is ethically and morally wrong of our generation to subject future generations to continually increasing landfill emissions damaging groundwater quality once the landfill containment systems fail, and fail they will eventually, before they have cleansed themselves. That is inevitable.

So, all governments should seek not only to reduce the waste sent to landfill, and flush their landfills, but also to treat their leachate biologically and start doing that as soon as the first waste is placed in a new landfill. Full sustainability will not be achieved, with current standard containment landfill practices, but at least the flushing process will have been begun.

Bobby Brown briefly appears at Houston funeral

NEWARK, N.J. –  Whitney Houston's ex-husband, Bobby Brown, has briefly appeared at her funeral before leaving.

Brown arrived as the service began. He walked to the casket, touched it and walked to the back of the New Jersey church Saturday.

Security guards were saying Brown would be seated but the people he arrived with had to sit apart from him. Instead, Brown left and appeared upset.

A message seeking confirmation of whether Brown was invited to the private service was sent to Houston's publicist.

Houston died Feb. 11. A cause of death hasn't been determined.

Houston and Brown were married 15 years and have one daughter. In 2003, police responding to a domestic violence call about Brown found Houston with a cut lip and bruised cheek. Their tumultuous relationship ended in 2007.

Vast solar tornado spied on the sun

A tremendous tornado whirling across the surface of the sun was captured by a NASA satellite recently -- an amazing wonder of the solar system that may be as big as the Earth itself.

The video was recorded by the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), a sun-watching satellite that has transmitted a series of stunning photos of solar flares in recent months. The new video shows darker, cooler plasma shifting back and forth above the sun's surface over the span of nearly 30 hours stretching from Feb. 7 to Feb. 8.

And the giant tornado may be as large as the Earth itself, with gusts of up to 300,000 mph, explained Terry Kucera, deputy SOHO project scientist and a solar physicist with NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center.

“It’s about 15,000 degrees Fahrenheit -- relatively cool,” Kucera told FoxNews.com. After all, the sun’s corona is a whopping 2 million degrees, she explained.

Such tornadoes (Kucera classed it a “solar prominence”) have been known of for decades; the European Space Agency's SOHO spacecraft captured evidence of them as early as 1996, mainly near the Sun's north and south poles at the time. And though they resemble their cousins here on Earth, they’re created entirely differently, Kucera said -- through magnetism, not pressure and temperature fluctuations.

“Those motions you see, it’s all just moving along the magnetic field somehow -- but we’re still looking to understand what’s happening with these things,” Kucera said.

The storm was created by competing magnetic forces, which pull the charged magnetic particles on the sun back and forth, creating a spinning mass of plasma that tracks along strands of magnetic field lines, NASA explained.

The spinning top of the tornado is mesmerizing, but Kucera noted the span of the prominence as well. The long, ribbon shapes could span hundreds of thousands of miles, she said.

“In total length, this could be dozens of Earths -- quite large,” she said.

Such detailed, high-resolution recordings of the immense tornadoes was not possible until the launch of SDO.  The satellite has several cameras on board that capture solar activity in different wavelengths and frequencies, all in the name of science.

“Each wavelength of light tells us something different,” she said.

John Glenn fever gripping Cape Canaveral -- again

Three days before the 50th anniversary of his historic flight, the first American to orbit the Earth addressed employees at Kennedy Space Center. The NASA auditorium was packed Friday with hundreds of workers, many of whom stood along the walls to see the space legend.

The 90-year-old Glenn was joined on stage by Scott Carpenter, 86, the only other survivor of the original Mercury 7 astronauts.

Glenn recalled how he and his fellow Mercury astronauts traveled to Cape Canaveral to watch a missile blast off. It was a night launch, and the rocket blew apart over their heads.

"That wasn't a very good confidence-builder for our first trip to the cape," Glenn said. Improvements were made, and Glenn said he gained confidence in his Mercury-Atlas rocket, a converted nuclear missile. Otherwise, he said he would not have climbed aboard.

Glenn's Friendship 7 capsule circled Earth three times on Feb. 20, 1962. Carpenter followed aboard Aurora 7 on May 24, 1962.

They were the third and fourth Americans to rocket into space. Alan Shepard and Gus Grissom flew short suborbital missions in 1961, the same year the Soviet Union launched two cosmonauts into orbit on separate shots.

Glenn and his wife, Annie, who turned 92 on Friday, were on hand Thursday evening for the attempted liftoff of the newest of the Atlas rockets. Windy weather forced a scrub of the Navy satellite launch.

Local TV reporters covering the Atlas V launch attempt talked more about Glenn than the countdown. The news media swarmed Kennedy again Friday for NASA's kickoff of a full weekend of anniversary festivities.

During Friday morning's hour-long presentation, Glenn and Carpenter paid tribute to their five deceased colleagues: Shepard, Grissom, Wally Schirra, Gordon Cooper and Deke Slayton.

"We need five more chairs here," Glenn told the crowd.

The two pioneers received standing ovations.
